The Space Before Our First Hello
Writing from the Silent Years
A tiny seed begins to grow, A secret only we both know. So small and soft, a hidden start, A miracle inside your heart. I watch you change, so slow and strange, A quiet wonder, out of range. That little heartbeat, faint and sweet, Makes every thump a joyful beat. The sickness fades, the sun appears, I sense you growing through the days. I see your fingers, toes appear, I long to hold you though you’re not here. A gentle flutter, soft and light, A butterfly in deepest night. I feel you move beneath her skin, A love no words could hold within. Her belly grows, a lovely round, A sacred space where you are found. I speak to you in whispers low, A love that’s waiting to be known. You kick and turn with playful might, A little dancer in the night. I rest my hand upon her side, And feel you move with joyful pride. The time draws near, I wait and pray, For you to come, for that great day. Each ache she bears, I stand beside, For soon I’ll hold you by my side. You’re getting strong, you push and press, A sweet and lovely restlessness. I dream of holding you so tight, And kissing you by morning light. The final moon, the time is here, I breathe with hope and joyful fear. With every push, a cry so new, The world is blessed because of you.
A poem written during the silent years, simply written for someone precious to me.
